Detroit Shipping Company
The Detroit Shipping Company pops up unexpectedly in Cass Corridor - right between downtown and midtown. This dope space is made of 21 shipping containers…yes like the ones on trains. The two level-multi use space houses local restaurants, a coffee/ice cream shop, two bars, indoor/outdoor courtyard seating, and my favorite part – two art galleries that wrap around the upper level of the space.
I recently stopped by to see “Go for It: An Exhibition by Phil Simpson”. The Detroit artist’s “Smile” art does just that, you can’t help but to smile when looking at his work. Mission accomplished as getting us to smile is the goal. Showing in the main gallery, his work features bright colors, some well-known characters, and our favorite emojis.
Flint artist Pauly Everett is the bridge gallery’s featured artist. Having seen his work around home, I was excited to see what he’d brought to Detroit. Each piece was bright and abstract, you can definitely see the street art influence. Pauly is known not just for his art, but for empowering kids of Flint and the community as a whole through art and creativity.
